Initially the main characteristics of the constitutional monarchy are outlined. Afterwards the key reasons for the emergence of the constitutional monarchy as the most disseminated and well established form of governance in the XIX century European constitutionalism are presented. The factors for the adoption of the constitutional monarchy in the emerging national constitutionalism of four Balkan states – Serbia, Greece, Romania and Bulgaria – are pointed out. Finally the reasons for the establishment of the constitutional monarchy as dominating constitutional model in Southeast Europe from the 1860-ies until the Interwar period are analyzed.
