This paper analyses the legal framework concerning the appraisal of academic staff and outlines the main trends in the appraisal rules in the context of the ongoing reforms in the higher education system. Modern requirements for a high level of the educational process are reflected in the overall state policy for the management of higher education and in the normative regulation of public relations in this sphere. Appraisal is an important mechanism for assessing the contribution of each member of academic staff to improving the quality and effectiveness of teaching and research. The presented analysis of the current legal framework for the appraisal of academic staff will enrich the doctrine and will serve to improve the legal regulation in its future amendments. At the same time, the article has a practical orientation to support the activities of the attestation committees, as well as in drafting the internal regulations of higher education institutions and scientific organizations.
