This article examines the evolution of the legal status and role of the accused in the Bulgarian legal tradition from the establishment of the First Bulgarian State in 681 to the post-liberation period of Bulgaria 1878 - 1944. The analysis traces the main legal sources, the influence of Byzantine, Ottoman and European legislation, as well as the changes that occurred as a result of the modernization of the Bulgarian criminal procedure system in the 19th and 20th centuries. The aim of the study is to trace how historical and legal changes have shaped the legal status of the accused.
The article covers three key stages: - Medieval period - Krum legislation, Byzantine influence and the importance of customs; - Ottoman rule - the place of the accused in the Ottoman criminal law system and its impact on Bulgarian legal practices; - Post-release period – the formation of the modern criminal procedure system, the adoption of European models and constitutional guarantees for the rights of the accused.
