The research examines the special grounds provided in the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Act for the unilateral termination by the employer of employment relationships with professors, academicians, corresponding members, and employees holding the scientific degree “Doctor of Sciences”. It argues for the need for legislative amendments to the special statutory framework, namely: raising the age threshold triggering dismissal for professors and Doctors of Sciences, and extending the same ground for termination to associate professors. A de lege ferenda proposal is advanced for a fundamental change in the legal framework, namely the replacement of the current mandatory obligation to terminate employment relationships with a discretionary right of the employer to dismiss on the same ground.
